From a playful-looking stoat to a mantis shrimp guarding its eggs, the animal subjects in the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards are captivating. This year’s winning photographers captured creatures in Svalbard, Norway; Bangladesh; Brazil and the depths of the Indo-Pacific.

On Tuesday, the World Photography Organization announced the shortlist and winners in the open competition, which allowed submissions from people of all ages and experience levels. Of the 415,000 total entries, which also included images in the youth and professional categories, the open awards received 200,000.

Snap of dedicated nurse among winners of NHS photography competition

An image of a nurse with nearly 50 years of experience has been announced as one of the winners of a national photography competition for NHS staff and volunteers.

The best photographs have been chosen from five categories in the contest held to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS.

The winners and runners-up will be exhibited at the Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden, London, from July 5.

The photograph of Mother Obe, a nurse at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital – who has 47 years’ experience, was taken by Nurse Emmanuel Espiritu and won the Our People category.

A winner in an international photography competition has recognized his award after revealing that his artwork was generated with the help of artificial intelligence.

German artist Boris Eldagsen said he submitted his image to this year’s Sony World Photography Awards in a bid to test whether such competitions are prepared for the entrance of realistic, AI-generated submissions. The Mobile Photography Awards has just announced the winners of its 12th annual competition which recognizes talented smartphone photographers. This year a record number of entries were received from photographers all over the world but surprisingly hardly any of the winning images were shot on the latest camera phones such as the iPhone 14 (opens in new tab) or Google Pixel 7.

A Photographer Who Found Instagram Fame for His Striking Portraits Has Confessed His Images Were Actually AI-Generated

As the followers of Jos Avery’s Instagram account continued to increase so did his guilt.

His @averyseasonart account features mostly black-and-white portraits of sharp facial features and blurred backgrounds. Oftentimes, Avery provided the subject’s name and a cutesy anecdote about their life, such as Lucy, “a strong woman from the Bronx,” or Jared, a Boston photographer,
